Make your own Lut’s with a 3 step process
Making Lut’s are simple and it’s all down to a 3-step process using DaVinci Resolve which is a free editing program best for colour grading.
Download DaVinci Resolve Here: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve
Step 1: Log To Rec. 709
Once you have recorded in a log format your first step is too convert its colour space to a rec.709 one. By doing this you can make the Colour’s pop out and have a cinematic look.
Drag your clip and the images or scenes you want to take the grade from onto the timeline:
The Rest of the Action is now going to be in the colour section of Davinci seen at the bottom by this logo.
To convert from Log to 709 we need to add another serial node. to do this click your first node and hold ALT+S to add another. This is the node we will be converting our space too.
In the Top left there is a LUT section here you will find a bunch of brand names followed by conversion luts which you can drag and drop onto the picture. For me I recorded in a Panasonic V-Log so I will be using that lut associated with it.
The piece now looks like this and you can already see the colour’s Pop right out. Now its time for the fun part.
Step 2: Applying the Look
Applying the look is very simple. For starters, add another node as this will be where we are creating the look we want.
Underneath the selected log layer you should have all the clips you dragged into the timeline at the beginning. To take the look from one of these we need to keep selected the log layer and Ctrl click the image we want to take from.
Once clicked it should highlight like this.
From here you just press Shot Match to this clip and you have your grade.
Here how mine looks now:
Step 3: Generating a LUT
Step 3 is the easiest out of all 3 steps because now all you have to do is right-click your layer and press generate LUT then the cube you want. Save this in a safe place and now you have created your own LUT.
You can now use these Luts for your own piece or save yourself some money for buying someone else’s. Thank you for Reading find more tutorials On the Blog page.
